Storage and Disposal of Medication

Improper prescription drug use is a serious public health issue. Storing and disposing of medications properly can help reduce harm.

Storage

Medications should be stored out reach of children, and in a safe place to prevent others from accessing them.

Pain relievers are a leading cause of serious poisoning of children and pets when they are left where others can get them.

Always keep prescription medications in their original packaging so it is clear who was prescribed the medications and to clearly display the directions for appropriate use.

Disposal

Find a disposal site near you for safe disposal of prescription medication:

If there is no take-back program near you, you can mix medicines with an unpalatable substance like kitty litter or used coffee grounds, place in a sealed container (like a plastic bag), and throw away in household trash.

To dispose of empty pill bottles, make sure you remove all identifying information and/or make label unreadable.
