What is ZS, you ask?

women in leadershipMany healthcare and behavioral health organizations across Nevada are already on their ways to becoming what is considered a High-Reliability Organization (HRO); which begins with making the commitment to shift the paradigm, to foster an accountable and just-culture. This journey involves the completion of the comprehensive ZS Learning Series, and working in teams to implement policies and procedures to support suicide safer care throughout every stage of the patient experience. It all starts leaders and leadership.

  • Zero Suicide (ZS) Framework focuses on a set of evidence-based principles and practices for preventing suicide within health and mental health systems.
  • The foundational belief of ZS is that suicide deaths for individuals under care are preventable.
  • Zero Suicide requires a system-wide approach to improve outcomes and close gaps.

“This month, I want to focus on those ZS Leadership Teams currently tasked with implementing ZS at their organization. Leadership Teams are handpicked by Leadership at every organization; and every one selected for the inaugural cohort some going on three years ago, is Amazing. I can understand why these specific champions were chosen. Despite the impact of the pandemic experienced by every one of us in the helping fields, these frontline champions kept showing up and pushing forward; making use of every moment to stay engaged, and united; pursuing ZS, and taking the framework to the next level within each of their organizations; creating work plans to implement ZS, and taking a deeper dive into their organization's suicide prevention policies and procedures. Now, Teams are poised to rewrite the suicide prevention policies and procedures to align with ZS and the Surgeon General's National Suicide Prevention (2012) and most recently, The Surgeon General's Call to Action on Suicide Prevention (2021). It all starts with leaders and leadership- And I am honored to be a part of the Nevada Zero Suicide Initiaitve; because our leaders are willing and relentless in leading Zero Suicide, in this state and for the nation.”
