This introductory course, from the The Homeless and Housing Resource Center (HHRC), provides foundational information about the neurobiology and prevalence of opioid use disorder (OUD), the whole-person care framework and best practices, treatment and recovery supports for OUD, and supporting housing stability for individuals with OUD.
Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) have unique risks and struggles, including opioid and other drug use. With 79% of study samples reporting opioid use and 52% reporting drug-related overdose, the opioid epidemic has disproportionately affected youth who are homeless. Housing First interventions employ housing as a basic human right and assert that housing should be provided first, regardless of engagement in other treatments. While a unique opioid prevention intervention, housing first strategies serve as a baseline for other beneficial interventions targeting drug use. This recorded presentation is designed for psychiatrists, physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses/nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, other mental health clinicians working in a community health capacity.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) collaborates with other federal agencies to address housing stability for individuals with serious mental illness through various programs. These programs, including PATH, TIEH, SOAR, and others, aim to expand access to mental health and substance use disorder treatments, provide support for recovery, and improve housing stability for vulnerable populations. SAMHSA also launched the ALL INside initiative to address unsheltered homelessness nationwide.
